Summon gems

Anyone have a quick explanation on how they work? (pls) study

I can't tell if they store stuff to help get summon XP or if they store pouches if you want to camp something -- or something else :O

My understanding is that they store uncharged pouches, and have the capacity to later charge these pouches as if you were at an obelisk, without actually being at an obelisk.

Squeal of Fortune - Summoning Spirit Gems

Give the Squeal of Fortune a spin this weekend and you can take away three new spirit gems to give your Summoning a huge helping hand!

A recent update to Summoning allows pouches to be combined with shards and charms into an uncharged state, without having to visit an obelisk. This means your inventory can hold more pouches, for more efficient Summoning runs and quicker training!

Spirit gems are a new addition to RuneScape, and there are six in total. Each gem can store a number of uncharged pouches inside. Head to a Summoning obelisk and charge your gem. All pouches inside the gem will become charged – and you’ll receive all that Summoning XP in one large chunk!

All pouches that are created via spirit gems are in noted form and each gem can be used and charged a set number of times before disappearing.

You’ll find three spirit gems – spirit sapphires, spirit emeralds, and spirit rubies – as drops in-game: a permanent addition to RuneScape. The other three – spirit diamonds, spirit dragonstones and spirit onyxes – can hold more uncharged pouches, but you won’t find them in game: they can only be won this weekend from the Squeal of Fortune!

To have a chance of winning one of these three superior spirit gems, spin the Squeal of Fortune between Friday 6th December 00:00 GMT and Monday 9th December 23:59 GMT. In a different time zone? Convert this to your local time here.

Reading the Recent Updates sub-forum on RSOF, there has been a huge out cry about this update.
As far as anyone has been able to tell, it served no purpose aside from allowing a new sof item to be created. This wouldn't be so bad on its own; the problem arises because you now NEED to win the rare sof prizes in order to get the best exp.
Findable in game:
Sapph gem - 5 uses
Emerald gem - 10 uses
Ruby gem - 15 uses

Findable only from SOF.
Diamond gem - 100
Dragonstone gem - 400 uses
Onyx gem - 1000 uses

Effectively, the current training method was nerfed and the only way to recover from the nerf is through SoF. A bit rude if you ask me, though anyone who has put up with all of the poor update choices we have put up with so far isn't likely to quit any time soon.
